Disinfectant Efficacy Testing
(DET) Determine biocidal effect of disinfectant
What is Disinfectant Efficacy Testing?
Disinfectant efficacy testing is the determination of biocidal effect of a disinfectant in the environment which is used, against the organisms it is intended for use against. This is usually expressed in bacterial ‘log-reductions’.
Why do we do it?
It is the responsibility of manufacturing facility to validate the effectiveness of a selected disinfectant. Contrary to popular belief, it is not often acceptable to take the manufacturers efficacy recommendations – as this result is obtained under entirely different presentations. A thorough validation procedure will test selected disinfectants against specific organisms and surfaces, as these all affect efficacy of the disinfectant. Guidelines for such testing are detailed in:
Suspension Efficacy testing - BS EN 13704
Hard Surface Efficacy testing - BS EN 13697
USP 1072
How can we help assure compliance?
At Honeyman all of our Disinfectant Efficacy tests are tailored to each of our clients individually. Our experience with performing this range of testing ensures that you receive results specific to your environment and your disinfectants.
Hard surface testing typically includes:
Full method development and neutralisation validation
Disinfectant contact times specified by client/product recommendation
Samples of client surfaces used as coupons – this checks efficacy disinfectant on your surfaces
Disinfectant testing against isolated in-house flora – this checks efficacy against microorganisms in your environment.
Disinfectant testing against compendial organisms
-Bacillus subtilis ATCC19659
-Candida albicans ATCC10231
-Staphylococcus aureus ATCC6538
-Escherichia coli ATCC11229 or ATCC10536
-Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC15442
-Aspergillus brasiliensis ATCC16404
